Through the hard work of many dedicated residents of Senoia, on March 17, 1989 the Senoia Historic District was entered on the United States Department of the Interior's National Register of Historic Places. One of the provisions of this recognition is that the city creates zoning standards, regulations and guidelines that will protect and advance development goals in the Historic District. The focus of the Historic Preservation Commission is the Preservation, Rehabilitation, Restoration and Reconstruction of Historic Properties. New construction in the Historic District should complement rather than interrupt, obscure, or otherwise damage or destroy the historic neighborhood. The Historic Preservation Commission was created under the Historic Neighborhood Preservation Ordinance (Chapter 39 of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Senoia) to insure that such goals are met.
